Audio and video
Since version 1.3 · Updated:
MusicServer Connect uses audio and video files exposed by the connected server through OpenSubsonic/Subsonic or UPnP/DLNA. The server must index videos and offer them through that interface. The plugin cannot add video support to an audio-only server.
Use videos in VirtualDJ
- Add the folder with video files to the server's media library and wait for it to be scanned.
- Connect MusicServer Connect and All tracks open. Videos delivered from the server appear along with the music files; Mixed playlists are also possible.
- Load a video onto a deck and open the video area in VirtualDJ. VirtualDJ handles playback, preview and video output. The plugin does not modify the file.
If a file is missing, first check that it is available on the server itself. If it appears in the plugin but will not play, open the same file directly in VirtualDJ. This helps distinguish file compatibility from a server-access problem.
File extension and codec
A file extension identifies a container format. MP4 files, for example, can contain different video codecs. VirtualDJ must support the container and both the video and audio codecs. Support for MP4 therefore does not guarantee playback of every MP4 file.
Relevant audio formats include MP3, AAC/M4A, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, WMA and WavPack. Video formats include MP4/M4V, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, MPEG and WMV. Actual availability depends on the server and VirtualDJ playback support.
Metadata and offline files
The plugin uses metadata supplied by the server. Supported tag fields depend on both file format and server. A playable track may therefore lack album artist, genre, BPM or key. A file extension alone does not indicate how complete its metadata will be.
Saving a video offline preserves its media type. VirtualDJ still needs the appropriate codecs for playback. The file is saved in the format supplied by the server.
Multiple genres
If the server provides multiple individual genre values, the titles appear under each of these genres. Does he provide a list of how Techno/Hard Trance or Techno; Hard Trance, MusicServer Connect also splits them into individual genre nodes. Spaces around separators are optional. Duplicate genre values do not create duplicate tracks in a genre node; the full catalogue still contains the track once.
Separators within brackets also belong to the name: Techno (Peak Time / Driving) remains a single genre. Splitting uses the UPnP or OpenSubsonic responses: no media downloads, file-tag reads or additional database are needed. A genre omitted entirely by the server cannot be recovered. The genre text shown for a track remains the metadata supplied by the server.
